Fertility Over 35: Hidden Factors That Affect Your Chances of Pregnancy
If you’re over 35 and trying to conceive, you’ve probably heard some version of this:
“Your fertility is declining.”
“Your biological clock is ticking.”
“You don’t have much time left.”
And while age does play a role in fertility, the conversation often stops there… and that’s where it becomes incomplete.
Because if age were the only factor that mattered, we wouldn’t see women in their late 20s struggling to conceive… while others in their late 30s or even early 40s get pregnant naturally.
So what’s really going on?
The truth is, fertility is about much more than age. It’s about the internal environment your body is creating for ovulation, hormone balance, and egg quality.
What Actually Impacts Fertility After 35
Age affects egg quantity and, to some extent, egg quality. But it’s only one piece of a much bigger picture.
Here are some of the most important (and often overlooked) factors that influence fertility:
Egg quality and oxidative stress: Eggs are highly sensitive to oxidative stress. Poor diet, toxin exposure, inflammation, and nutrient deficiencies can all impact the health of your eggs regardless of age.
Hormone balance and ovulation quality: You can have regular cycles and still not be ovulating optimally. Low progesterone, weak ovulation, or estrogen imbalances can all affect your ability to conceive and sustain a pregnancy.
Thyroid function: Even subtle thyroid dysfunction can interfere with ovulation, implantation, and early pregnancy. Many women are told their thyroid is “normal” when it hasn’t been fully evaluated.
Blood sugar and insulin levels: Blood sugar imbalances can disrupt hormones, increase inflammation, and negatively affect ovulation.
Inflammation in the body: Chronic, low-grade inflammation can impact everything from egg quality to implantation.
Nutrient deficiencies: Fertility requires a high demand for nutrients like B vitamins, iron, zinc, magnesium, and omega-3s. Many women are unknowingly deficient, even when taking prenatals.
Stress and cortisol levels: Chronic stress doesn’t just affect how you feel, it can directly impact hormone signaling, ovulation, and overall reproductive function.
Environmental toxin exposure: Endocrine disruptors found in plastics, personal care products, and even household items can interfere with hormone balance.
Why Age Isn’t the Full Story
Age is something we can’t control. But many of the factors above are.
That means your fertility isn’t just determined by how old you are, it’s influenced by how well your body is functioning.
Two women can be the same age and have completely different fertility experiences based on what’s happening beneath the surface.
One may struggle with inflammation, hormone imbalances, and nutrient depletion.
The other may have strong ovulation, balanced hormones, and a well-supported internal environment.
Same age. Very different outcomes.
The Problem With Conventional Fertility Conversations
Many women over 35 are quickly funneled into a limited set of options:
“Keep trying”
“Come back in a few months”
“Consider IVF”
But what’s often missing is a deeper investigation into why the body isn’t conceiving in the first place.
Basic fertility workups may not assess:
Thyroid antibodies
Fasting insulin
Cortisol patterns
Estrogen metabolism
Inflammation markers
Nutrient status
So even when you’re told “everything looks normal,” there may still be underlying issues that haven’t been addressed.
A Different Approach to Fertility
If you’ve been trying to conceive and feel like you’re missing answers, you’re not alone.
Fertility is rarely random. Your body is always giving feedback. The key is knowing where to look and what hasn’t been fully evaluated yet.
That’s exactly what I’ll be breaking down in my free Fertility Masterclass on June 25th at 6PM ET via Zoom.
Inside, I’ll walk through:
The biggest factors that impact fertility (beyond age)
What often gets missed in standard testing
How to start identifying your personal roadblocks to conception
If you’re trying to conceive (especially if you’re over 35) this is information you deserve to have.
